The Coherence Cycle

Rather than seeing isolated problems, we begin to notice the relationships between them.

Seeing the organisation as a connected whole

The Coherence Cycle begins with a different way of understanding organisational life. Rather than treating challenges as separate issues to solve, it helps leaders explore the relationships between experiences, patterns and conditions that shape how people work together.

The Coherence Cycle creates a way of noticing what is occurring, exploring what may be influencing it and strengthening the conditions that allow the organisation to move forward with greater alignment.

The Four Movements of the Cycle

The organisation does not move through these movements in a fixed order. They are interconnected and often happening simultaneously.

Understand

Before meaningful change can occur, there needs to be a clearer understanding of what is happening.

Every organisation carries information about its current reality. It exists within conversations, decisions, relationships, behaviours and patterns that have developed over time.

Understanding creates space to notice those patterns more clearly.

Realign

As understanding develops, attention naturally turns towards the connections that may need strengthening.

Realignment is not about creating agreement or removing difference. It is about ensuring that different parts of the organisation remain connected through shared purpose, understanding and intention.

Strengthen

Coherence isn’t maintained through intention alone.

As organisations evolve, leaders and teams require the capacity to navigate complexity, hold different perspectives, communicate effectively and make decisions that support the whole.

Strengthening is about developing the capacity required to communicate, make decisions and act collectively as complexity continues to increase.

Sustain

Coherence requires ongoing attention.

Not because organisations are fragile, but because they are constantly evolving.

Sustaining coherence means remaining aware of what is changing, staying connected to purpose and continuing to nurture the relationships and conditions that allow people to work together effectively.

How the Cycle helps leaders see differently

Organisational challenges rarely exist in isolation. A communication issue may reflect differences in understanding. A performance concern may reveal something about alignment, leadership or the conditions surrounding people. A relationship tension may be a signal of broader patterns within the organisation.

The Coherence Cycle helps leaders explore these connections. By looking beyond individual symptoms and towards the relationships between people, purpose, culture and performance, leaders can begin to understand what their organisation may be revealing and what may need attention.

Seeing differently changes what becomes possible

Most leaders don’t need another layer of complexity added to their already complex environment. Instead, what’s often needed is a deeper understanding of the complexity that already exists.

The Coherence Cycle provides a way of exploring organisational life that brings attention to the relationships between purpose, people, culture, communication and performance.

It helps reveal patterns that may have remained hidden and creates space for more meaningful conversations about what the organisation is experiencing and what it may require.

When we see more clearly, we can respond more consciously. From that place, different possibilities can emerge.

If you would like to explore your organisational coherence, the first step is a Coherence Conversation.

A Coherence Conversation is a structured exploration of what your organisation is experiencing, what those experiences may be revealing and where greater alignment may be possible.
