The Coherence Cycle

Understanding how organisations remain connected as they evolve

Organisations are continually changing.

New priorities emerge. People bring different perspectives. External circumstances shift. Relationships develop. Decisions create consequences that influence what happens next.

Over time, these interactions shape the experience of organisational life.

The Coherence Cycle provides a way of understanding these movements and the connections between them.

It is not a sequence to complete or a process to follow. It is a way of noticing where an organisation is experiencing strength, where connection may be weakening and what conditions may help it remain aligned as complexity increases.

The Four Movements of the Cycle

The organisation does not move through these movements in a fixed order. They are interconnected and often happening simultaneously.

Assess

Before meaningful change can occur, there needs to be a clearer understanding of what is happening.

Every organisation contains information about its current reality. It exists within conversations, decisions, relationships, behaviours and patterns that have developed over time.

Assessment creates space to notice those patterns more clearly.

Realign

As understanding develops, attention naturally turns towards the connections that may need strengthening.

Realignment is not about creating agreement or removing difference. It is about ensuring that different parts of the organisation remain connected through shared purpose, understanding and intention.

Strengthen

Coherence is not maintained through intention alone.

As organisations evolve, leaders and teams require the capacity to navigate complexity, hold different perspectives, communicate effectively and make decisions that support the whole.

Strengthening is about building those capabilities into everyday organisational life.

Sustain

Coherence requires ongoing attention.

Not because organisations are fragile, but because they are constantly evolving.

Sustaining coherence means remaining aware of what is changing, staying connected to purpose and continuing to nurture the relationships and conditions that allow people to work together effectively.

Seeing differently changes what becomes possible

Most leaders do not need another layer of complexity added to an already complex environment. Instead, what is often needed is a deeper understanding of the complexity that already exists.

The Coherence Cycle provides a way of exploring organisational life that brings attention to the relationships between purpose, people, culture, communication and performance.

It helps reveal patterns that may have remained hidden and creates space for more meaningful conversations about what the organisation is experiencing and what it may require.

When we see more clearly, we are able to respond more consciously and from that place, different possibilities can emerge.
